#The Year of Light Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is a spin-off of the Toy Story film series, and is the fifth overall installment in the franchise. It features the character Buzz Lightyear, but does not take place in the same fictional universe as the main Toy Story films, where Buzz Lightyear is a plastic toy. Instead, it is billed as a film seen by characters from the main Toy Story universe, with Lightyear being a human “space ranger”.
Lightyear 2022 Movie – Storyline:
Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger in Star Command, and his commanding officer and best friend, Alisha Hawthorne, discover the habitable planet, T’Kani Prime, along with their new recruit Fetheringhamstan. After discovering that the planet hosts hostile organisms, they are forced to retreat to their exploration ship. During the retreat, Buzz damages the ship, forcing the crew to leave to make repairs and continue their journey. A year later, the crew has built a fledgling colony with the infrastructure necessary for repairs. Buzz volunteers to test the hyperspace fuel, a critical component of the repair. However, after a four-minute test, he realizes that four years have passed on T’Kani Prime, due to time dilation effects from traveling at relativistic speeds. Buzz is introduced to Sox, a robotic feline, and continues testing hyperspace fuel. With each exam, four more years pass on T’Kani Prime, until eventually more than 62 years have passed. During this time, the colony develops; Alisha raises a son with his wife Kiko, their son grows up, develops and gets married. Alisha later dies of old age. And Sox improves the composition of the fuel, allowing it to achieve faster-than-light speeds. Against the orders of his new commanding officer, Commander Burnside, Buzz uses this new fuel composition for a successful hyperspace test. Upon landing, Buzz discovers that 22 years have passed, during which T’Kani Prime is attacked by Zyclops robots led by the mysterious Zerg. Buzz meets members of the colony’s defense forces, including Izzy Hawthorne, Alisha’s now-adult granddaughter; Mo Morrison, a fresh, simple recruit; and Darby Steele, an aging criminal. Despite initially being reluctant to work with them, Buzz eventually warms to them. Together they plan to attack Zerg’s ship and destroy the invading force.
Lightyear 2022 Movie Review:
I enjoyed the first thirty minutes of Lightyear. The pacing was decent and the humor/heart was in the right place. Once the trailer takes a turn the story becomes a pretty predictable entry for Pixar, and my five-year-old was incredibly upset to leave the theater. The socks steal the show but it’s not enough to liven up the boring plot. Wait for Lightyear to stream on Disney+. This movie is not scary. But it’s not good. As a comedy it fails. I only laughed a few times, almost exclusively at the cat. Most of the jokes in my audience were crickets and one group rolled their eyes at me.
As a sci-fi film it fails. It gives us the most basic child version of many sci-fi concepts stolen from other films like Interstellar. And a lot of it doesn’t make sense if you think about it for more than a few seconds. There was a great fight scene and a few good action moments, but mostly I didn’t care for the action itself.
The film does this where it keeps throwing wrenches into the plan, creating obstacles that the characters must overcome. This is usually a good strategy and makes any subsequent success feel earned and satisfying. But every obstacle is the result of dumb characters, stupid mistakes, or just plain clumsiness. This makes it difficult to stay invested. When this strategy is executed well, the obstacles have a much better reason, such as a really smart opponent.
