The Haunted Mansion has been my favorite Magic Kingdom ride for decades. It made it hard to see another poor attempt at a film version. It’s not scary, it’s just lazy. Disney has had little success with theme park films, the exception being Pirates of the Caribbean. They seem to have run out of original ideas for their live action movies… even animated movies are being rehashed as live action movies. It has been very rare among the original ideas of the Mouse House.
The script itself is quite surreal. This is a story based on a 50 year old attraction story. Add a backstory and a little romance and call it a day. Oh, and don’t forget to add in some version of each spooky effect from the ride. Acting ranges from very good to down… well… dull. Most of the cast does fine with what they were given. A prime example is Danny DeVito. The man never puts less than 110 percent into whatever he does. At the bottom is Rosario Dawson, an otherwise fine actress who seems like she doesn’t want to be in this particular movie. She shows little emotion even as her world is falling apart. Who knows, maybe it’s a directive decision.
FX also varies. Again, the decision may have been made to maintain their reigns and not stray too far from the original riding. And then there’s the problem with humor… hardly any. I remember only laughing once with a few chuckles here and there. And it wasn’t just me, the whole theater was the same. But perhaps the weirdest thing about the movie was the ridiculous product placement. No physical space, the confines of the mansion would have put him out of place. This was verbal placement. For example, as Harriet arranges a séance, she pulls out a notepad and mentions that she bought it at CVS on the way. what Who cares where it got it? Costco gets a plug like one or two others.
